Chipotle to close all restaurants on Feb. 8 for food safety meeting

Chipotle is shutting down all of its stores nationwide for a few hours next month to hold a national staff meeting about food safety.

The meeting will occur on February 8 and the company's more than 1,900 restaurants will take part.

Chipotle said the meeting would provide an opportunity to thank employees, discuss changes and answer questions.

Chipotle (CMG) has suffered from several outbreaks of E. coli, Salmonella and norovirus that infected customers and led to an unrelenting stream of criticism and mockery on social media.

Customers have posted photos of Chipotle meals and joked about getting infected with E. coli or norovirus.

Before the outbreaks, Chipotle had cultivated a loyal following with its adoption of non-GMO standards and other health conscious initiatives.

And investors loved the stock. At the height of its popularity, Chipotle's stock was at a high of about $750. It has since plummeted to as low as $428 a share -- a 42% drop.

The trouble began in August when 64 customers in Minnesota were infected with Salmonella and about 100 people were struck by norovirus in southern California.

These infections were followed by an E. coli outbreak in October and November that affected 53 people in nine states.
In December, Chipotle suffered from two more outbreaks. Roughly 140 students at Boston college were infected with norovirus and a second new incidence of E. coli broke out affecting five people in three states.

Why your food might not be as safe as you think

The trouble didn't end with the outbreaks however. Customers have sued Chipotle and the company was recently served with a subpoena by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations.

The company has also projected a drop in sales. Chipotle said it thinks the recent outbreaks will end up costing between $14 million and $16 million.

CEO Steve Ells said earlier this week that he was "hopeful" the Centers for Disease Control would soon declare that the outbreaks were over.

"We know that Chipotle is as safe as it's ever been before," Ells said on Jan. 13 at a conference in Orlando.

He said Chipotle is planning to lure back customers with a new marketing campaign in February.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold said there hasn't been an E. coli case in two months. Since then, the company says it's been serving a million customers a day "without incident."

Take a break and let us do the cooking this year.   The hustle and bustle of the holidays can stress out the calmest of souls. Arm yourself with these stress-reducing tips and have yourself a relaxing holiday season.
Tips For a Stress-free Holiday in Santa Barbara
-Celebrate within your means: Finances can be a major cause of stress, even more so during the holidays.  Make a holiday budget and stick with it.  Evaluate your spending habits, eliminate unnecessary expenses and look for more affordable options to holiday expenses.  Affordable restaurants in Santa Barbara like Max’s offers breakfast, lunch and dinner at prices for every budget!
-Time management: The big day is looming on the calendar and there is still so much to do! In addition to your standard daily obligations, you now have to find the time check off your holiday to-do list. Organizing your schedule in advance can take some of the stress out of the holidays and be sure to include a visit to Max’s Restaurant and Cucina.
-Avoid scheduling overload: It’s not only holiday tasks that are a drain on our time, there is also the seemingly endless array of holiday celebrations to attend.  Festivities with friends, family and coworkers can consume an alarmingly large portion of our vacation time.  As hard it it may seem, it is important to learn to say no.  Save your time and your sanity by graciously declining  holiday events that are going to lead to stress. Sometimes less really is more.
-Remember to celebrate: So much time, effort and expense goes into executing our holiday plans that sometimes we forget to enjoy ourselves.  Take time to spend treewith friends and family; remember to appreciate the food, drink and company.  Dinner at Max’s is a great way to spend time with loved ones and celebrate the season.
-Don’t overindulge: Temptation is everywhere during the holiday season. We are surrounded by baked goods, rich sauces and decadent foods. While there is no reason to indulge a little (after all, it IS the holidays), try to tip the balance in your favor by making healthy choices when you can. More sensible choices will lead to less guilt. This in turn adds up to one less thing to stress about over the holidays. Max’s offers healthy alternatives, ask your server for details.
-Exercise: Get out for a family walk or incorporate a quick at home workout into your day. This may not be the best time to start training for a marathon or to start a strenuous exercise regime, but fitting in a little exercise over the holidays is a great way to reduce stress.
-Prioritize and delegate: How much holiday chaos is really necessary? Eliminate and reevaluate non-essential chores and outings. Ask for help and put your family to work.  The old adage is true; many hands do make light work! Share the holiday responsibilities and free yourselves to spend quality holiday time together.
-Be realistic: Perfection is an unattainable goal. The tree can be crooked and your holiday decor doesn’t have to come straight from the pages of Martha Stewart’s handbook.  Try to practice a little less perfection and a little more celebration this holiday season.
Be sure to see our friends across the street at Santa Barbara’s most comprehensive day spa, Qui Si Bella. They have several holiday specials running right now!
We are so grateful to have customers like you and wish you all a joyful holiday season and a healthy and prosperous 2016.

Group rescues leftover restaurant food, gives to needy

athensmessenger.comAs a gardener, Teresa Curtiss of Athens hates to see food go to waste.
So when she was seeking a way to get involved in the community, it’s natural that she’d end up doing something food-related. She volunteered a few times at Community Food Initiates, and donated food (including from her garden) to the Athens Food Pantry.
“I had been looking for a way to volunteer in the community,” she recalled.
Then she saw an article about a food rescue operation in California. Food rescue involves collecting leftover food from restaurants and businesses and distributing it to those in need.
“No one was doing this exact work (in Athens),” she said, so in December of 2014 she began collecting food at Bob Evan’s Restaurant and Chipotle and distributing it. Before long, others got involved — including Adele Hanson, Sue Jago and Nanda Filkin, who are on the board of what is now called Athens Food Rescue.
In July, Athens Food Rescue gained its nonprofit status. About 10 volunteers now help with the effort.
Hanson, who is retired from the Athens City-County Health Department, said she first learned what Curtiss had in mind when Curtiss stopped by the health department.
“Teresa came with this idea and she wanted to check with the health department to see if it was OK,” according to Hanson, who said she (Hanson) liked what she heard and decided to participate after she retired.
Hanson said her own interest in hunger dates back about 20 years ago when the principal of The Plains Elementary School told her of the issue of hunger in the area.
“I’ve just been interested in solving the hunger problem ever since,” Hanson said.
Athens Food Rescue collects food from the Athens Country Club, Bob Evans, Chipotle, Texas Roadhouse, Witten Farm Market, Zoe’s and two other locations.
Texas Roadhouse also held a fundraiser for the program in November, and financial donations have been received from The Athens Foundation, Athens AM Rotary and Quidel Corp.
When Texas Roadhouse has leftover food — such as green beans, rolls and mashed potatoes — the choice is either to throw it away, or donate it.
“By our standards, we can’t use it the next day,” said Deedra Semones, managing partner at the Athens restaurant. So, the choice was made to donate the food.
“It’s going to help the needy, and that’s a good thing,” Semones said.
Athens Food Rescue does not store the collected food, but instead immediately delivers it. Curtiss said volunteers are trained in safe food handling practices.
So far, food has been delivered to My Sister’s Place, Athens Church of Christ, Clem House, the Respite Center, Rural Women’s Recovery Program, The Gathering Place, Timothy House and United Campus Ministry.
Since the beginning of 2015, the program has distributed more than 7,000 pounds of food, according to Curtiss.
Athens Food Rescue keeps track of where it picks up food, how much is picked up and where it was delivered. Curtiss said quarterly thank-you letters are sent to donors telling them how much they donated and to whom it went.
“We are working to get more donors,” said Curtiss, who hopes to expand the program.
Athens Food Rescue has a Go Fund Me page (www.gofundme.com) that so far has raised $745 toward a $5,000 goal.
Curtiss said funding is needed for equipment (such as coolers), outreach materials and to help with insurance costs, and the organization would like to provide gasoline cards to its volunteers. She said a “pie in the sky” wish is for Athens Food Rescue to have its own vehicle.
